This excerpt is from Portrait and Biographical Record of Iroquois County, Illinois 1893.
"When sixteen years of age he entered the Prussia army and served there a period of some six years. Afterward he became Assistant Warden of the peniteniary at Naugard. He continued in office until the labor became too arduous for his advancing years, and was then retired on a pension, which he drew as long as he lived."
Carl and his wife, the former Friederike Wilhelmine Henriette Ebert, had nine children. At the time the book was published (1893), his widow and eight of his children (five sons and three daughters) were still living. All of the sons (Charles, Otto, William, Paul and Ernst) had come to America, but not all at the same time. Carl and Wilhelmina stayed in Germany, where Carl died between 1880-1893 and Wilhelmina died after 1893.
Of the sons, the two oldest (Charles and Otto) fought for the Union in the Civil War. Charles went on to become a furniture dealer and an undertaker in Gilman, and served as Justice of the Peace for 44 years. Otto lived out his life in Gilman, working for a while in partnership with Charles. William, Paul and Ernst all came to Peoria where William tended bar before becoming a Policeman for the Peoria Park District. Ernst tended bar but spent the last few years of his life in the Peoria County Hospital with tuberculosis where he died and was buried in 1902. Paul worked for some time as a beer bottler and later worked with his son Paul Jr. for the T. P. & W. Railroad.
William was born in either Colberg or Naugard in the Pommerania region of Prussia, on January 24, 1845 to Carl Heinrich & Wilhelmina (Ebert) Meyer. His parents Carl & Wilhelmina had nine children - six boys and three girls. Five of the sons emigrated to the U.S., leaving their parents and homeland behind.
William lived around the Gilman, Illinois, area with his older brothers before moving on to Peoria.
Rosa Seiler was born in Füllensdorf, Canton Basel-Land, Switzerland, on November 3, 1858. She was orphaned at a young age in Switzerland and came to the U.S. around 1874.
William and Rosa were married July 22, 1876, by the Police Magistrate in Peoria, and they had 5
children:
